Cockerill 2647:

This locomotive was built at Cockerill in 1907 at the request of the sugar factory of Saulzoir (North), located between Cambrai and Valenciennes. In 1921, this sugar factory was transformed into a brickworks by Scheldt & Meuse in Anzin due to the significant damage suffered during the First World War, which led to its closure.

In 1960, the locomotive was transferred to the steel plant of the parent company in Anzin, where it remained until its closure in 1966. It underwent an overhaul and boiler exchange to be equipped with that of locomotive 2750, built in 1910.

Then, it was put on sale at Patry S.A (a retailer of large industrial equipment) and was acquired on January 10, 1976 by Mr. M. Léchelle, a collector from Charente, who brought it home and stored in a hangar of his company. It was rediscovered in July 2017 in this collection, and we acquired it with the aim of putting it back into service to perform demonstrations at the Bois du Cazier. Many machines of this type were used by companies in the region, and locomotive 2647 finds its place on this site which houses an industry museum.

Features: It is a very simple to use and maintain vertical boiler locomotive, easily modular to adapt to different tasks. Cockerill locomotives of this type were widespread in Belgian industry as well as in neighbouring countries. Thanks to its "Field" type vertical boiler that allows a very fast start-up in just 45 minutes, compared to 4 hours for a conventional tubular boiler locomotive, this machine was very flexible and was an asset for companies.
